Seriously... this fabric is just plain yummy! I know I have bragged before about the awesome discount upholstery fabric in my neck of the woods. The place is called U-Fab, and they really are... well, fabulous!
Which is exactly why I could not resist jumping on the giant-floor-pillow-bandwagon. These pillows are fun for BB, incorporate my color scheme into the living room, and are not overpowering.
They are pretty simple to make and they are a great stash-buster. In addition to the yummy fabric, I used unwanted fabric from my stash pile, unused blankets, an unused mattress pad and even an old quilted grocery cart cover. Plus I had some leftover stuffing from the loveseat project.
Both pillows are made from two large squares and four rectangles. For the larger pillow, the squares were about 36". The smaller pillow was about 30".
I sewed the rectangles to one of the squares with the right sides facing.
Next I sewed the other square to the rectangles with the right sides facing. At this point I had an inside-out square with the side edges opened.
I sewed three of the edges closed. Then I stuffed all my stash-busters into the middle and tried to even it out. Last, I used the stuffing around the top, bottom and outer edges. I hand sewed the last side together.
And there you have it:
I've had a lot of questions about the dimensions of the rectangles. The rectangles on the large pillow are 7 inches. That is the finished measurement (without seam allowance). And the smaller one is 6 inches without seam allowance. I used rather big seam allowances because I did not finish any of the edges.
Happy Sewing!

ReplyDeleteI was wondering, I am having my dad build be a pallet couch, do you thinking these would work great as couch cushions as well?
My daughter is also asking for a pallet couch. When I saw the picture I also instantly thought of these as a possibility. Just one problem ... I am sew-challenged! But they do look perfect!
DeleteI want to make floor pillows for our play room and these would be perfect! What kind of stuffing did you use?
ReplyDeletehi i used the foam fillers that can be found quite cheaply on e-bay hope that helps , joy :-D
DeleteLove your step-by-step tutorial. However, not being crafty or one who sews, I wondered if you would give further hints ... what to use in place of leftover stash? And as others asked, more exact dimensions on the rectangles? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMrs. Yazzie, I just made this project. I guessed at the depth for the rectangles and did 6 inch rectangles, this turns them into more like 5 inch depth when sewed up, for seam allowance. The original project has deeper sides/rectangles than mine, I can tell by the pictures, but mine came out really well, and I'm very happy with the result. I am guessing the orginal project had between 8 and 10 inch depth. That would make them 36" long and any where from 6" to 12" deep, depending on your personal preference. I used an old blanket we won't use any more, old sheets, scraps of fabrics to get the pillow bulked out and then added just reguar pillow stuffing for comfort and to fill it out. I also added a zipper to mine so that I could pull out all the stuffing, wash it and either re-stuff or eventually put all new filling inside. Great, easu project! I always sit on the floor and a floor pillow was just the ticket for me.
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteDo you have measuremets for side panels. Beautiful job you did
ReplyDeleteI work for a new home builder in our area and like to post different decorator ideas for homeowners and homeowners to be. The current trend in our area are homes with small lots and ex-large bonus rooms. These rooms offer great flexibility for using the space....i.e. tv/entertainment corner, reading corner, craft area, play area, etc. I would like to include a link to your tutorials with your permission.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
I'm not a sewer, and have always been intimidated by box cushions, but you make it look so easy. I'm gonna try!
